The Watford City Wolves Wrestling Team had a very eventful weekend! With the Varsity wrestlers in Killdeer, the JV team in Sidney, and the girls in Rugby.
The JV team had no placers, but they all wrestled their best. The girls division had one placer, Cora Sorenson, who took 5th place.
The Varsity team had 8 placers!
Hayden Pastrano 160 pounds, placed 7th, he came in with no criteria, same as Wyatt Boekelman, who had a strong start to his day. In the quarters he went up against the Class A, No. 3-ranked wrestler in the state, from Dickinson, Conrad Kopari. Hayden looked stronger, but not quite as technical. He had Kopari on his heels in the first period, but ended up getting pinned. He came back strong to earn his first Varsity placing of the season taking 7th place in the tournament.
Corban Sorenson placed 5th at 127 pounds. He came into the tournament seeded 6th, and got a rematch in his quarter-final match against the No. 5-ranked in Class A, Korbin Kraft from Minot. He started off the match winning 1-0, however, got stuck in a scramble and got pinned. He finished the day strong with a major decision win, and a pin in the 5th place match.
At 133 pounds, Wyatt Boekelman placed 4th. This was the first time Wyatt was able to get to 133, so with no criteria he came in unseeded. Making the quarter-finals match against the 3-seed from Velva, Lucas Soli. It was a tight match and Wyatt got a tight power half and pinned him. He went on tech, falling and pinning his way to the 3rd place match where he had a rematch with Soli. This time going the distance and then some. In an overtime scramble Soli would come out on top. Regardless, it was a smarter and more intense match from Wyatt.
Rowdy Mott placed 4th at 139 pounds, and came in seeded 4th. He pinned his way to the semi-finals and went up against the No. 4 Class B, Brextyn Yanish, of Velva. Coming up short, he wrestled back up to the 3rd place match. He wrestled another ranked wrestler from Killdeer and lost by fall in the second period.
Also at 139 pounds, Will Langford placed 6th and came in unseeded. He sprung an upset in consolation quarter-finals over Harding County, South Dakota’s Cash Hanson. Where he once again, had to wrestle Rowdy to get to the 3rd place match. In the 5th place match against Ty Burton from Minot, who tech falled Will in the quarter-finals he came up short with a score of 13-10.
Zane Wagoner took 3rd place at 145 pounds. He pinned his way to the semi-finals adding two more to his title. He took on South Borders No. 6-ranked Class B, Joe Keller. The match was an intense one, with many reversals and ended with one where Zane got caught and pinned. He came back strong and got another pin, making it a total of 28 on the season. He won by major decision in the 3rd place match.
Brier Arnegard placed 3rd at 152 pounds. In the typical BT fashion he tech falled his way through the tournament, extending his 4-point nearfall title. His semi-final was a dogfight of a match against South Borders No. 2-ranked Class B, Cole Stock. Tied 1-1 in the third period with less than 3 seconds in the clock, there was a very questionable takedown that was awarded to Stock. Brier came back pinning his way to the 3rd place match.
And finally, Sam Inman at 285 pounds, who took the HWT Championship! This was the first Varsity tournament win for Sam and it was well deserved. He was quick on his feet and tough on top pinning his way to the finals matches. He spent less than a minute on the mat for both of his finals matches. Sam’s opponent in the finals was Porter Johnson from Harvey-Wells County. They were 1-1 this season. Porter injured his ribs in his semi finals match and was not able to wrestle Sam in the finals resulting in a medical forfeit. Not an expected outcome however very proud and he came back as a champion.
