Stanley 81, Watford City 57
Watford City traveled to Stanley for a non-region matchup last Monday night. After a good first quarter, the Wolves offense struggled to keep pace with the high-scoring Blue Jays, specifically Drake Schlosser who scored 40 points. “We shot the ball well from the 3-point line,” said Watford City head coach, David Gumke. “Landon Vetter had a very good shooting night making five 3’s for the game with three of those five coming in the first quarter.
Thaydan (Arnold) got us started with one and Carter (Breitbach) added one of his own for five in the first quarter. We also were changing up our defense playing man and zone. I thought that we defended their two bigs, Ben Hynek and Bennett Larson, well through the first half.” Hynek and Larson combined for 13 points in the first half, while Schlosser scored 21.
“The downward trend did start in the first quarter as we had 10 turnovers in the first,” continued Coach Gumke. “It was by far our best shooting percentage from the 3-point line at 55 percent for the game. Our offense is getting fun to watch and the way we are playing is leading to good shots that are now starting to go down.”
The Wolves offense was efficient, finishing 46 percent from the field along with 55 percent from the 3-point line and combined for 17 assists. Turnovers hurt the Wolves again, as they committed 25 compared to Stanley’s 12.
“They had a 25-point third quarter as both Hynek and Larson got involved in the scoring with Schlosser,” said Coach Gumke. “We couldn’t keep Drake in front of us. He has a very good first step and stays low using only one dribble to get to the basket. He is a fantastic finisher. We started to face guard him, but it was a little too late. He was also 9-for-10 from the free throw line.”
Drake Schlosser recently committed to NDSU to play football next school year.
