Dickinson Trinity 53,
Watford City 38

Watford City traveled south for a rematch against the Dickinson Trinity Titans. This matchup was higher scoring, but Trinity emerged victorious once again. The Titans scored the first six points and led by as many as nine in the first quarter. Watford City’s offense kept pace with Trinity in the second quarter as their deficit fluctuated between five and nine points. Dickinson Trinity held a 25-18 lead at halftime and then scored the first eight points in the third quarter. Trinity’s largest lead came late in the third at 37-21 thanks in large part to Annabel Scheeler and Nevaeh Tormaschy. The Wolves got within 12 points by the end of the third quarter and then got two 3-pointers from Bailey Mattson to make it 40-34 early in the fourth quarter. Dickinson Trinity answered back with a 7-1 run to put the game away.
“The first time we played Trinity, we were ahead most of the game,” recalled Watford City head coach, Tom Dwyer. “In that one we struggled to score in the second half and let them come back. Tonight, we were down quite a bit from the start. We did get it to within six points in the fourth but just couldn’t get closer. Trinity is well coached, their size and quickness make them a good defensive team.”
The Wolves did not shoot a high percentage from the field, but they did limit their turnovers to 11. Scheeler led the Titans with 11 points while Tormaschy pulled down 16 rebounds. Mattson narrowly missed a double-double as she had 12 points and nine rebounds. Annabelle Bohn had three steals.

Watford City welcomed the Warriors on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves got back into the win column with an important Region 4 victory. The first quarter was tight as both teams battled with turnovers. Standing Rock held two separate two-point leads early on and stayed within three after the first quarter. Watford City found their rhythm in the second quarter, scoring the first 13 points en route to a 35-11 halftime advantage. “We took care of the ball and got good looks,” said Coach Dwyer. “We made shots. That 25-point second quarter might have been our record this year for most points in a quarter. And we did well defensively and forced quite a few turnovers.”
Watford City kept their foot on the gas pedal in the third quarter, scoring 17 more points. Freshman Salil Shoemaker had a breakout performance for the Wolves. She led all scorers with 18 points and dominated in the rebounding category, especially on the offensive side. “Salil is extremely athletic and strong. She rebounds well. I think she got maybe five offensive rebounds in the second quarter alone. She can finish around the hoop and she can help push the ball in transition. Salil has improved a lot over the year. We’re lucky to have her on our team.”
As a team, Watford City made seven 3-pointers, shot 43 percent from the field and won the turnover margin 27-19. Freshman Layna Lebeaux led Standing Rock with 16 points.
With the win, Watford City improved to 9-10 overall and 2-3 in Region 4.
