The Watford City Wolves girls basketball team began their 2024-25 campaign with a 48-45 victory at New Town on Thursday night.
The game was tight from the opening tip until the final buzzer. Both teams struggled through some early offensive difficulties as they appeared a little bit rusty in the first game of the season. The Wolves enjoyed a 7-6 lead after the first quarter. After Watford City scored the first four points of the second quarter, New Town ended the first half on a 16-6 run. The 22-17 Eagles lead was their largest of the game.
Watford City came out of the locker room focused and determined. They started the second half on a 12-2 run as they reclaimed a lead they would not relinquish. Bailey Mattson gave the Wolves their largest lead of the game at 35-29 early in the fourth quarter. New Town answered with an 8-1 run that got them within one point with four minutes left. Freshman Annabelle Bohn scored on the next possession for the Wolves with one of her clutch baskets. A little over a minute later, Senior Adi Schaff swished in a three-pointer to put the Wolves ahead 41-36. The Eagles cut the lead back to 46-44 with 31 seconds left. On the next Wolves possession, Harlee Jacobson delivered a perfect bounce pass to set up Schaff to put the Wolves up four with 21 seconds remaining. “New Town just kept playing hard,” said Watford City head coach, Tom Dwyer. “They didn’t give up, and made tough shots. They made some threes, got some transition layups, and had a couple tough finishes on post moves. We have to clean up some of the mistakes we made.”
Statistically, Watford City had a balanced attack. Bohn led the Wolves with 16 points and seven steals and shot 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Bohn and Jacobson both had four assists and combined for a 8-4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
