The Alexander Comets picked up their seventh and most dramatic win of the season last Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the Kenmare-Bowbells Honkers 44-36 in the first round of North Dakota’s 9-Man Playoffs.
Saturday’s result marked the first 9-Man playoff win in Alexander football history. With the memory of last year’s playoff loss in overtime to Hettinger County still lingering, the Comets dug deep, persevered and put together an effort that their community will remember forever.
The first half was an offensive shootout. Alexander got the ball first and scored with the wind at their backs when Jacob Novak found Jadon Champion for a 9-yard touchdown on fourth down. The Comets added the two-point conversion to lead 8-0 with 7:38 left in the first quarter. Kenmare-Bowbells responded on their first drive when Cohen Seime scored a 4-yard touchdown run and the Honkers added the two-point conversion. Kenmare-Bowbells was driving again when Alexander’s Jullian Gant made a leaping interception in the end zone with nine seconds left in the opening quarter.
