Wildfires impact October oil production; industry responds swiftly

Last week, the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources (NDDMR) released their December 2024 Director’s Cut report on October 2024 production numbers. The report highlights a slight decline in oil production due to wildfires, but NDDMR leaders remain optimistic, citing steady production and a focus on longer lateral wells.
McKenzie County Statistics
McKenzie County continued to lead oil production in North Dakota in October 2024, according to the December report. With 5,722 wells producing over 11.3 million barrels of oil; the county accounted for a substantial portion of the state’s total oil output.
Statewide Statistics
Overall, North Dakota’s oil production saw a dip in October due to wildfires that swept through the state, but the industry’s response was swift, according to Nathan Anderson, Director of Mineral Resources. Speaking at the December 2024 Director’s Cut, Anderson presented the October production numbers, acknowledging the impact of the fires.
