From gavel-banging ceremonies to hands-on demonstrations, Watford City recently wrapped up a bustling City Government Week, filled with events that connected residents, especially the city’s youngest citizens, with their local government.

The week kicked off with third-grader Leo Samuelson of Miss. Andersen’s class at Badlands Elementary taking on the role of “Mayor for a Day” after winning an essay contest. The excitement began early on Mon., April 7th, when Honorary Mayor Leo enjoyed a special ride to school with SRO Wellen. Later that day, Mayor Riely addressed all the third-grade classes at Badlands Elementary, sharing insights into his mayoral duties. The day culminated with Leo attending the City Council meeting at 6 p.m., where he had the unique opportunity to sit alongside Mayor Phil Riely.

The educational outreach continued on Tues., April 8th, and Thur., April 10th, when the Watford City Public Works crew showcased four pieces of their impressive equipment at Fox Hills Elementary and Badlands Elementary, respectively. These demonstrations offered students a close-up look at the tools and machinery that keep the city running smoothly.

A highlight of the week was on Wed., April 9th, when city employees took on a different role, serving lunch at both elementary schools. This provided a fun and informal opportunity for interaction between city staff and students. City Government Week in Watford City proved to be a successful endeavor in fostering civic engagement and building stronger connections between residents and their local government.
