The vibrant spirit of creativity and collaboration has taken center stage at Watford City High School with its recent production of “James and the Giant Peach.” Under the guidance of language arts teacher Travis Barnes, the show not only captivated audiences, but also marked a significant achievement in the school’s performing arts program.
Travis Barnes, a North Dakota native who has dedicated five years to teaching, shared his passion for education and the arts. “I wanted to be an educator to give students a voice and show them that they can have a real impact on the world around them,” he explained. This commitment to empowering students was palpably evident in the production, which involved an impressive 42 students - 32 from the high school and 10 from the middle school - who participated in either performing or working behind the scenes.
The production was a resounding success, attracting over a thousand attendees throughout its run. The show began with special performances for students from Badlands Elementary and Fox Hills Elementary, allowing younger students to experience the magic of theater firsthand. The excitement continued with four public performances, each drawing around 100 enthusiastic community members.
