Last Thursday, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum requested a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration, to assist in the recovery efforts of the historic wildfires that spread across northwestern North Dakota in early October. Burgum’s request follows the executive order he issued on Oct. 3, 2024, declaring a statewide fire emergency.
Through a news release, the Office of the Governor stated that Burgum directed a letter to President Joe Biden through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), requesting a major disaster be declared for the period of Oct. 5-6, 2024, for both McKenzie County and Williams County. Officials are estimating the overall cost of damages from the fires to exceed $8 million.
